Believing in 'Islam' Would Make You Stupid and Vulnerable?

The Malaysian government has said that "Muslims might get confused" if religions other than Islam is allowed to use the word "Allah" to refer to their God.

That is, frankly, the dumbest thing said about Muslims I've ever heard. (Let me say at the beginning that this is an attack on the Malaysian government's manipulation of 'Islam', not on all Muslims or Islam in general.) To hold that claim seriously would make people wonder what would believing in Islam/ becoming a Muslim do to your brain.

Seriously, think about it -- according to the Malaysian government/ religious authorities, Muslims in Malaysia are too 'vulnerable' (read: stupid?) to handle the following:

1, The Hollywood comedies "Bruce Almighty" and "Evan Almighty" (which the government was asked to ban because it was blasphemous)

2, Religious books written by foreign authors, especially if they are written in Bahasa Melayu (which the government has banned their imports)

3, Seeing the 'patung patung' (statues) erected by infidels by the roadside (which the Sabah Mufti has declared 'haram' to Muslims by his fatwa)

4, Reading the reference to 'Allah' in a Catholic publication (for which the Ministry of Internal Security has banned the Catholic Herald)

5, Wishing the infidels for their religious celebrations such as Deepavali (according to the Perak Mufti and Takaful Insurance)

6, etc etc...

In other words, Muslims just "can't handle the truth!" They, as Muslims and believers of Islam, could be easily led astray.

This is very strange, because it seems to suggest that even though a Muslim could tell "the straight path from the crooked" and "Truth from Error" when they quit their original religion and converted into Islam, (i.e. knew how to choose what is the truth,) they have suddenly lost their ability to tell right from wrong after they become a Muslim? It is as if becoming a Muslim causes you instant brain damage!?

I mean, are you seriously telling me that when a Muslim picked up a copy of the “Catholic Herald” and read an article talking about “Allah” having a son called “Yesus,” he couldn’t tell that he was reading the “Catholic Herald” and not the “Harakah”?? You got to be fucking kidding me.

HELLO ABANG -- READ THE TOP OF THE PAGE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!

CAN'T YOU SEE THE WORD 'C-A-T-H-O-L-I-C'??? JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!!!

BUTA HURUF KE??

(And frankly, if this abang still can’t tell that he was reading a non-Islamic publication, then he’s most probably illiterate anyway -- the government would not need to save him from Satan’s seductive words disguised as Christian propaganda materials!!)

I would urge the government/ religious authorities to stop using this kind of stupid excuses which sounds like 'defending Islam' but in actual fact would only insult the intelligence of -- who else? -- Muslims, because they are indirectly saying that believing in 'Islam' (the Malaysian style) could make you stupid and vulnerable... This is a great disservice to Islam.

As Thomas Jefferson said,

"It is an insult to our citizens to question whether they are rational beings or not, and blasphemy against religion to suppose it cannot stand the test of truth and reason."

On the other hand, if the government has to resort to such desperate excuses and psuedo-reasons like "protecting the 'stupid' Muslims" in order to justify its discriminatory (YES, LET'S NOT FORGET THAT ULTIMATELY, WHAT THIS IS REALLY ABOUT) policies and actions (especially in order to violate non-Muslims' constitutional right to religious freedom), then we as the people should be alert.

Just like "A prince never lacks legitimate reasons to break his promise" (Niccolò Machiavelli), the Malaysian government never runs out of absurd reasons to violate the people's constitutional rights and freedom (aka 'social contract'). As some have said, when no good reason is given to justify an action by the government, "no reason, that is, that could not be instantly refuted by a literate teenager" (Noam Chomsky, MIT Professor), then we can only conclude that all the absurd reasons given are just excuses deployed to disguise the REAL MOTIVE -- to violate the religious freedom of non-Muslims.

Thomas Jefferson again:

"We are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it."

We are not stupid or naïve, no matter how much the government wishes us to be. I therefore call upon the government to stop insulting the intelligence of the Malaysian people, Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and take their hands off non-Muslims' religious freedom.

UPDATE: The Malaysian government has backed down.

"The publisher of Herald - The Catholic Weekly newspaper has been allowed to continue printing its Bahasa Malaysia section with no restrictions on the use of the word Allah for God."

I am happy that good sense has finally prevailed, and as far as I am concerned (not a Christian), I am happy to welcome this is a victory for the freedom of speech.

UPDATE 2: Nope, sorry folks, the Malaysian Cabinet still think that Muslims are too stupid and vulnerable:

"The restrictions on the use of the word “Allah” was still enforceable and shall be upheld as decided by the Cabinet in two of its meetings – on Oct 18 and Nov 1, 2006, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Abdullah Mohd Zin said.

Abdullah, who said the Prime Minister had instructed him to clarify the matter so the public would not be confused, told a press conference on Thursday:

“One of the reasons given to uphold the restriction is because that it has long been the practice of this country that the world Allah refers to God according to the Muslim faith.”

It was only proper for other religions to use the word "God" and not "Allah" when referring to their God in respective beliefs, Abdullah said, adding that the use of the word “Allah” shall not be made a public debate that may give the impression as if there is no freedom of religion in the country.

“The use of the word 'Allah' by non-Muslims may arouse sensitivity and create confusion among Muslims in the country,” he said."

All Muslims in Malaysia should be proud of the government and themselves. Really.

To prevent 'confusion' among non-Muslims, let's see the Malaysian government prohibit Muslims from reciting the following verses of the Quran:

5:17: "In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary."

9:5: "Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush."

47:4: "Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks; At length, when ye have thoroughly subdued them, bind a bond firmly (on them): thereafter (is the time for) either generosity or ransom: Until the war lays down its burdens. Thus (are ye commanded): but if it had been Allah's Will, He could certainly have exacted retribution from them (Himself); but (He lets you fight) in order to test you, some with others. But those who are slain in the Way of Allah,- He will never let their deeds be lost."

8:39: "And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do."

9:123: "O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him)."

And many, many other verses in the Quran -- they all should be immediately banned and deleted from the copies of the Quran found in Malaysia, and anybody who posseses a copy of the Quran with those verses (as well as those who print or import the Quran with verses in those words especially in languages other than Bahasa Melayu, since the kafirs are deemed not holy enough for Bahasa Melayu) should be detained indefinitely without trial under the ISA for suspicion of incitement to violence and hate.

It is only fair, in order to prevent 'confusion' among, and to protect the 'sensitivity' of, non-Muslims (for a change). After all, this is a government for all races and religion, and our Prime Minister is the "Prime Minister of all Malaysians", so let's see the non-Muslims getting some 'protection' for a change.

I say the Herald should fight all the way in the court because otherwise, one thing will lead to another. Today it is about 'Allah', tomorrow it could be many other things! The moment you accept government interference with your internal communications, that's it -- next time they might even stop you from telling the virgin Mary story because it would be an abomination of 'Allah' to suggest that 'Allah' could beget a son and the Christians would be accused of trying to 'confuse' Muslims again!! (Quran, 6:101 and 9:30) (Which would be a wet dream comes true for many extremist Muslims, I tell ya.)

This is simply ridiculous -- which means the ulterior motive is very obvious.

Juslo, spot on. Blind allegiance to a religion or cause means the negation of that power given to MAN (and not to the lower creation)- the power to reason. Dispensing with this power slides us down to the lower rung of the food chain.

I like your threads.

hey zorro, thanks!

"Dispensing with this power slides us down to the lower rung of the food chain."

that way, it would be much easier to govern us, innit??

“Food for thought: If everybody spoke Bahasa Malaysia as a first language, the government would not have a case in hell.”

(if i understood u correctly…)

i don’t think this is ‘ironic’ at all - many east malaysian natives apparently speak BM as first language. so, i don’t think the government has a case here.

anyway, i don’t agree that it has to b “EVERYBODY spoke BM as a first language” to defeat the government’s case. the correct question is NOT whether everybody speak that language, but this:

SINCE freedom to practise one’s religion applies to EVERYBODY, can the government infringe on ANYBODY’s freedom by restricting or make it more difficult for ANYBODY to learn about/practise her religion, including by banning books written in the language ANYBODY CHOOSES to use to practise her religion? n i don’t think it has to b a person’s ‘first language’ either - i might prefer to read my ’satanic bible’ in english but speak to my kids in tamil. what’s wrong with that?

————————————————

in the end, let’s b honest, this ISN’T about whether the CHRISTIANS in this country speak BM.

this is about whether the MUSLIMS in this country speak BM. n if they (the MUSLIMS, not the CHRISTIANS) speak BM, then the other religions should not use this MUSLIM language BCOS IT WOULD MAKE IT EASIER FOR MUSLIMS (not CHRISTIANS, again) TO LEARN ABOUT CHRISTIANITY (or any other religions perceived to b posing a ‘threat’ to Islam).

n if we take our position based on whether a particular language is/not a common language used by ***muslims/malays, (forget about the christians, even though THEY r the ones who want to read those books, not muslims/malays)*** i think that would b UNACCEPTABLE.

bcos 10 years from now, ***muslims/malays,*** could come out n say, “actually, a lot of us r using the Chinese/Tamil/ENGLISH language too, so please ban the Chinese/Tamil/ENGLISH books on kafir religions so that WE don’t get confused also, please?

frankly, i smell SHIT in this language pretext.

hi juslo, thanks for dropping in my blog. ya, i agree we seldom see eye to eye but in this post of yours i see all. :) that is i agree whole-heartedly with you. well said and well put. i should link this post of yours to my blog and maybe even quote some parts (boleh tak?).

ya, i had all along said that the goverment actions are usually an insult to the muslim. for example they ban muslim from visiting a christian exhibition show - aren't they telling us that muslim cannot see the exhibtion because if they do, they will suddenly convert to christianity? that is very much an insult, right?

you are right, johari's "muslim might get confused" is the dumbest thing a gomen man ever said about muslim. worst is when there were hints that just reading anything (without the word allah) in bahasa in a christian publication might confuse them!!

i also notice a letter writer, fatima idrus, in malaysiakini mentioning that herald using of allah is trying to prostylesise (sorry dunno spelling) the muslims. can you believe that? that is also a very dumb thing to say!

hi lucia,

i'm glad u stopped by. feel free to do whatever u want with my post... :)

i don't see anything wrong even if christians want to try to convert muslims - aren't MUSLIMS THEMSELVES doing the same to christians?? what's good for the goose must b good for the gander, unless muslims also agree that they cant prostylesise among followers of other religions.

we the kafirs r subject to islamic propaganda ALL DAY LONG, especially when they interrupt our drama series to announce maghrib prayers n cite a few verses from the Qur'an n Hadeeths TO THE WHOLE NATION INCLUDING THE KAFIRS - hell, they even come out with a fatwa saying that what the kafir do (erecting statues) is HARAM!!! but the kafirs r never worried.

so y should muslims worried about what the kafirs say or write in their 'INTERNAL memos'????

the more paranoid they r the more it makes people wonder whether they actually have more DOUBTS about their own religion than conviction???

Other religion’s symbology in the computer: What is PAS’s stand?
Hamba Allah

I hope PAS can become more than a political party. PAS not only has to be a political party, but also an active prostelyzation body. Prostelyzing to Muslims, the munafik (lit. hypocrites), and non-Muslims. Besides that, PAS should also become the reference in matters of laws (religious).

It is also hoped that PAS can open itself up to train mujahids (those who struggle in the way of God), because jihad is an Islamic calling (or required servitude).

I ask PAS’s opinion regarding a problem, that is, what is the edict towards using something that has symbols or pictures of other religions, such as the statue of Buddha? This is contained within Microsoft Office, specifically in the clipart, which has images of Santa Claus and statue of Buddha.

It is hoped that PAS can champion this issue, towards, for instance, banning/forbidding Microsoft Office, or even the computer, if such equipment can be made forbidden.

I am very worried because there is discussion about our people who wish to develop an IT system in Medinah. It is feared that Microsoft Office, too, will be brought in. It would be a travesty, should, on the soil of Medinah, idols will once again appear, in the form of drawings.

Help! Microsoft's threatening my religion...
http://asylum60.blogspot.com/2008/01/help-microsofts-threatening-my-religion.html

n mine: ;P

dear 'Slave of Allah' (writer of that letter),

thank u for your letter to harakah. after 3 weeks of debates n counter debates, the dewan ulama of pas have come up with the following answer to your problem.

the simple answer is DONT FUCKING USE THAT CLIP ART, MORON.

come back again IF microsoft FORCE U TO USE IT WHETHER U LIKE IT OR NOT. for now, just try to stay clear of public places bcos the AIR u breath might contain traces of alcohol n pork emitted by infidels which would b 'unclean' in the truest sense. (oh, try to use glove when u handle currency notes too -- u know, the currency notes in this country, according to our government, mostly circulate among the infidels more than the ummah, so u never know whether there is traces of alcohol n pork...)

i suggest trying to move to kampung baru where the % of muslims among the population is higher, so the air n the currency notes r 'cleaner'. (but beware of child molestors, though.)

thank u for raising your concerns. we wonder what would we do without u.

from,
Harakah Fatwa Desk.
------------------------------------------------------

i cant help but to ask once again:

Believing in ‘Islam’ Would Make You Stupid and Vulnerable?

i dont believe the answer is 'yes', so the only plausible anser to the above question is, they r doing this to MAKE A STATEMENT OF DEFIANCE to the western civilization.

employee at marks & spencer (knowing fully well that it's not 'house of islam') making that kind of remark is clearly intended to ANNOY & IRRITATE. i'm sure marks & spencer sells alcohol, n a whole lot of other haram stuff, so y still working there?

or, IF they really seriously believe in what they r complaining about, then we have a muslim population who r hell bent on OBLITERATING EVERYTHING non-islamic from our consciousness, even though things r not meant for them n human beings have free choice.

i smell APARTHEID again (bcos that's the ONLY answer to STUPID & VULNERABLE MUSLIMS like them)...

Bid to ensure temple concert watched only by non-Muslims
By IAN MCINTYRE

PASIR MAS: Organisers of a concert held as part of the celebrations at a small Taoist temple here were told to “cover up” so that the shows were only watched by non-Muslims.

Apparently, some Muslim men and women had been seen among the audience on Tuesday, the first night of the two-day concert with male and female artistes, and the district council was informed about it.

On Wednesday night, the council sent officers to prevent Muslims from watching the shows and told the organisers to put up a curtain to block the view of passers-by.

The event, to celebrate the birthday of the Gods, was held with an outdoor community concert organised by members of the Tao Tin Hu Keng Association.

MCA vice-president Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai, who was here for another function, said some people would interpret the action of the council as distasteful as it was only a two-day religious festival.

He said many such events were held at temples previously and no action were taken by the authorities.

In the incident, although the organisers received a permit, the local council found that they were flouting guidelines by allowing Muslims to view performances by female artistes, some of whom were “sexily” dressed.

Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan said the guidelines on outdoor performances clearly stated that female artistes were barred from performing. He said that although the concert was within the temple compound, it was held in an open space where others could watch.

He said any permit given by the local authorities were subjected to the same bylaws and should be respected by all.

State Gerakan chairman Datuk Ng Chiang Chin, whose house is in front of the temple, said it was the second time that a religious celebration at a temple was disrupted.

----------------------------------

if they believe that by watching the show alone muslims will go 'crazy' or convert into taoism, then they really live in a very funny world.

i thought they said that living in an islamic state WILL NOT affect the rights of minorities?? if muslims dont like/cant stand female artists, surely the non-muslims have the freedom to watch whatever they like???

oh, i forgot the 'caveat' - non-muslims have freedom to live their own lives n not subject to islamic laws PROVIDED it doesn't 'interfere with' or 'threaten' islam.

'interfere with' n 'threaten' BOTH interpreted by the islamic government. GOTCHA, DHIMMIS!!!!!!!!

Fact is... Somebody is trying to use religious as a powerful tool to rule the country. And if they can "mengharamkan" the erection of "Patung-patung" in the name of Islam, what makes you think they won't "mengharamkan" the erection of churches & temples? Or even demolish them... And don't think this is only the problem to people with religion, when the non-muslim is wiped out, it will be the non-believer's turn...
